Dr John Evans: The Ancient Stone Implements, Weapons, and Ornaments, of Great Britain (Classic Reprint)

The Ancient Stone Implements, Weapons, and Ornaments, of Great Britain (Classic Reprint)

Description

Excerpt from The Ancient Stone Implements, Weapons, and Ornaments, of Great Britain In presenting this work to the public I need say but little by way of preface. It is the result of the occupation of what leisure hours I could spare, during the last few years, from various and important business, and my object in undertaking it is explained in the Introduction. What now remains for me to do, is to express my thanks to those numerous friends who have so kindly aided me during the progress of my work, both by placing specimens in their collections at my disposal, and by examination of my proofs. Foremost among these must be ranked the Rev. William Greenwell, F.S.A., from whose unrivalled collection of British antiquities I have largely drawn, and from whose experience and knowledge I have received much assistance in other ways. To Mr. A. W. Franks, F.S.A.; Mr. J. W. Flower, F.G.S.; Mr. W. Pengelly, F.R.S.; Colonel A. Lane Fox, F.S.A.; Mr. E. T. Stevens, of Salisbury; Messrs Mortimer, of Fimber; Mr. Joseph Anderson, the Curator of the Antiquarian Museum at Edinburgh; and to numerous others whose names are mentioned in the following pages, my thanks must also be expressed. The work itself will, I believe, be found to contain most of the information at present available with regard to the class of antiquities of which it treats. The subject is one which does not readily lend itself to lively description, and an accumulation of facts, such as is here presented, is of necessity dull. Colin Sparks: Communism, Capitalism and the Mass Media

Communism, Capitalism and the Mass Media

Description

Colin Sparks provides a challenging reassessment of the impact of the collapse of communism on the media systems of Eastern Europe. He analyzes both the changes themselves and their implications for the ways in which we think about the mass media, while also demonstrating that most of the orthodox accounts of the end of communism are seriously flawed. There are much greater continuities between the old system and the new than are captured by the theories that argue that there has been a radical and fundamental change. Instead of marking the end of critical inquiry or the end of history, as some have suggested, Sparks argues that the collapse of the communist systems demonstrates how very limited and frequently incorrect the main ways of discussing the mass media are. He concludes with a provocative discussion of the ways in which we need to modify our thinking in the light of these developments.

Including Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders Into Less Restrictive Educational Settings

Description

Federal law mandates that students with autism and other handicapping conditions receive educational services designed to meet their individual needs according to the principle of "Least Restrictive Environment" (LRE), the legal standard for providing a free, appropriate education. Students with autism typically demonstrate significant deficits in the area of socialization and interaction. They do not naturally know how to share, make friends, or interpret the facial expressions and emotions of others. Conversational skills may be weak or lacking. Many have difficulty generalizing skills from one setting to another and may not able to grasp information through subtle environmental cues. The Eden II Programs is an agency that provides comprehensive service provision to individuals on the autism spectrum. Within Eden's educational programs, a model for supported inclusion has been developed to assist those students that can benefit from less restrictive settings a systematic process to help ensure a successful transition into these settings. Comprehensive assessments should be conducted to evaluate the skills needed in order to successfully transition. Supports, based on the philosophy of applied behavior analysis, should be provided by trained personnel, and data and other objective measures provide the basis for student evaluation and program decisions. This manual was developed to provide this practical information.

Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza,Mark Seielstad: Genes, Peoples and Languages

Genes, Peoples and Languages

Description

Historians relying on written records can tell us nothing about the 99.9% of human evolution which preceded the invention of writing. It is the study of genetic variation, backed up by language and archaeology, which provides concrete evidence aboutthe spread of farming, the movements of peoples across the globe, the precise links between races - and the sheer unscientific absurdity of racism. Genes, Peoples and Languages offers an astonishing investigation into the past 100,000 years of human history and a rare, firsthand account of some of the most significant and gripping scientific work of recent years. Cavalli-Sforza is one of the great founding fathers of archaeogenetics, and in this book he maps out some of its grand themes.

This package includes a paperback book and a CD of Tomie dePaola retelling his classic story against a charming musical score. 2010 Golden Canon Leadership Book Award winner! The future is now. Philip Jenkins has chronicled how the next Christendom has shifted away from the Western church toward the global South and East. Likewise, changing demographics mean that North American society will accelerate its diversity in terms of race, ethnicity and culture. But evangelicalism has long been held captive by its predominantly white cultural identity and history. In this book professor and pastor Soong-Chan Rah calls the North American church to escape its captivity The Moor: A Journey into the English Wilderness free epub to Western cultural trappings and to embrace a new evangelicalism that is diverse and multiethnic. Rah brings keen analysis to the limitations of American Christianity and shows how captivity to Western individualism and materialism has played itself out in megachurches and emergent churches alike. Many white churches are in crisis and ill-equipped to minister to new cultural realities, but immigrant, ethnic and multiethnic churches are succeeding and flourishing. This prophetic report casts a vision for a dynamic evangelicalism that fully embodies the cultural realities of the twenty-first century. Spiritual renewal is happening within the North American church, from corners and margins not always noticed by those in the center. Come, discover the vitality of the next evangelicalism.

The Moor: A Journey into the English Wilderness

Description

This book is Short listed for the 2015 Wainwright Prize. In this journey across England's most forbidding and mysterious terrain, William Atkins takes the reader from south to north, exploring moorland's uniquely captivating position in our history, literature and psyche. Atkins' journey is full of encounters, busy with the voices of the moors, past and present. He shows us that, while the fierce terrains we associate with Wuthering Heights and The Hound of the Baskervilles are very human landscapes, the moors remain daunting and defiant, standing steadfast against the passage of time.

Hugh Cunningham: Children and Childhood in Western Society Since 1500

Children and Childhood in Western Society Since 1500

Description

This book investigates the relationship between ideas about childhood and the actual experience of being a child, and assesses how it has changed over the span of five hundred years. Hugh Cunningham tells an engaging story of the development of ideas about childhood from the Renaissance to the present, taking in Locke, Rosseau, Wordsworth and Freud, revealing considerable differences in the way western societites have understood and valued childhood over time. His survey of parent/child relationships uncovers evidence of parental love, care and, in the frequent cases of child death, grief throughout the period, concluding that there was as much continuity as change in the actual relations of children and adults across these five centuries. For undergraduate courses in History of the Family, European Social History, History of Children and Gender History.

Crochet Saved My Life: The Mental and Physical Health Benefits of Crochet

Description

Crochet saves lives. It saved mine. In the worst throes of depression I found myself sobbing on the bathroom floor, the tip of a kitchen knife pointed into my wrist. I was aching to break the flesh and bring the pain to an end. Through sheer force of will, I pried my own desperate hands open and replaced the knife with a crochet hook. Then I crocheted to save my life. In this book, you will get to know me through my story of depression and healing. And you will get to know other women as well. You will meet Aurore who crochets to stay in touch with reality as she deals with ongoing psychiatric hallucinations. You will meet Laurie who made a new life with crochet after years of a life filled with abuse. You will meet Tammy whose crochet helps her with the ups and downs of living with Chronic Lyme Disease. You will meet Liza who crochets through the anxiety of having temporary bouts of blindness caused by an undiagnosed health condition. Here are some of the things you will hear them say: "When I crochet I don't think about how my body is now broken; I think about how I can create something beautiful and useful with my hook and either yarn or thread." -Vicki "When I'm anxious, I feel like a hollow hull. Crocheting helps fill up the void." - Aurore "I couldn't pay for therapy, but a few balls of crochet thread cost less than $20 and provided me with many hours of crochet." - M.K. "The feeling of the yarn and the rhythmic motions produced by crocheting are very quieting and help me regroup, recharge and become reconnected to my inner self amidst turmoil and confusion." - Aimee "Crochet helps me put my pain on the back burner for a while. It takes my focus away from how I'm feeling and puts it in a more productive place." - Shelli The two dozen women whose stories are shared in this book are the women who hook to heal. We are not alone. Studies shows that crocheters are numerous; research and anecdotal evidence show that people of all ages, from all walks of life, with all types of health conditions may find healing through their hooks and yarn. Join us on our journey.

The Petite Advantage Diet: Achieve That Long, Lean Look. The Specialized Plan for Women 5'4 and Under

Description

After more than twenty years as a weight-loss and fitness expert, Jim Karas had seen enough body types to know one thing for sure: petite women's greatest advantage is also their greatest disadvantage-their bodies have the potential to change rapidly. Now, if you want to lose weight and you have the right program, this is great news. But if you're under stress, have developed bad eating habits, and have become sedentary, it's disastrous. And petite women know this! They've watched their lanky friends eat pizza and drink beer without gaining an ounce, while they quickly gained the infamous freshman fifteen. They've watched their taller gal pals instantly drop the baby weight, while they still made excuses as their babies turned to toddlers. Here is the take away: shorter women are perfectly poised to lose weight, more quickly regain their shape, and add more muscle mass than their taller sisters and friends. Now, "The Petites" reveals that, with the right mindset and a few strategic changes, weight loss is not only possible, it is possible this week! Karas enlists petites to embrace their advantages, go after real and rapid results using his program, and get serious about creating lasting change in their body shape. From a strategic 21-day eating plan to detailed exercise instruction to easy-to-implement tips on what to drink, how to eat out, and even how to cultivate better posture, Karas has created a truly holistic program for this body-conscious group. "The Petites" is packed with promise: readers will learn that carbs can be their friend. They'll see why cardio workouts-in the form of all those bikes, steppers, and elliptical machines-are actually a surprising way for petites to gain weight. And, because petite women are typically faster, more flexible, and more structurally aligned, they'll quickly understand why strength training is their shortcut to tall benefits. From portion sizes to dress sizes, everything in this plan is the perfect fit for any woman 5'4 and under. The best news of all? For petite people, small changes can really add up!
